Building on 90+ years of experience training diplomats and leading government officials, the Fletcher School is pleased to launch the Fletcher Global Diplomacy Institute, a 5-day, in-person Executive Education Program for mid-career and senior diplomats.
This program is designed as a strategic retreat to recalibrate your diplomatic playbook for a rapidly changing world order. We will examine the evolving geopolitical landscape and its impact on security, global governance, and how diplomats work with business and civil society to shape global affairs. We will build tools and approaches to be effective in your strategic leadership, negotiation, communication, and crisis management. We will explore how to apply these frameworks to critical global challenges, such as sustainable development, migration, and new technological developments. Participants will develop actionable solutions for their individual portfolio of priorities.
Open to diplomatic professionals from across the globe, the Institute also provides a unique opportunity to build your transnational network and to discover new opportunities for cooperation. We look forward to creating a space of global exchange and brainstorming that includes representation from numerous countries around the world.

Episode 1: How is the world order changing? In this section, Ian and Alnoor discuss the challenges of adapting to a multipolar world order, where different ideologies and leadership styles are emerging. They note that the world is no longer unipolar and is not bipolar (such as if countries were to align with either the US or China on specific issues). They highlight the opportunities for smaller states to leverage their power through coalitions and international institutions. Exploring how to respond to seismic shifts, Ian emphasizes the importance of consistency in applying international law, despite the challenges of power inequality and variable contexts. Alnoor notes that small states can use their moral persuasion to bring issues to the table, such as climate change, and can play an influential role in conflicts as mediators. This episode also discusses the impact of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, on the distribution of power in the international system. They highlight the digital divide in cybersecurity and the potential risks and opportunities AI presents. AI has already redefined power in various domains, including elections, military strategy, and business, and we note the need for governments to work closely with businesses to address challenges.
-
Episode 2: How do institutions and leaders respond? In this section, the conversation shifts to the impact of the changing world order on leadership and institutions. Alnoor and Ian discuss the challenges of changing institutional structures to accommodate agility and rapid response to policy challenges. Introducing the concept of "adhocracy," they explore the challenges facing hierarchical institutions and the need for agility, collaboration, and flexibility. Alnoor highlights the importance of involving middle management in the change process and the need for leaders to adapt to new ways of working. Ian adds that international institutions like the World Bank and the UN are undergoing reforms, including decentralization, to better address complex global challenges. The discussion also touches on the role of non-state actors, particularly civil society organizations, in facilitating dialogue and creating change. We emphasize the need for these organizations to be vocal in their advocacy and for their funders to support collective action rather than individual organizations.
-
Episode 3: How do we train diplomats for this environment? In this section, Alnoor and Ian shift the conversation to training, exploring how to prepare diplomats for this new environment. They emphasized the continued importance of core diplomatic skills such as strategic leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution, while also highlighting the need for integrating agility, innovation, and creativity -- both individually and within organizations. We also discuss key elements the Global Diplomacy Institute, such as an engagement with global challenges, leadership-skill-building, and collaborative problem-solving. The GDI program aims to equip diplomats with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving geopolitical climate and engage with diverse stakeholders, and we hope that this program can provide a creative and educational space for leaders to think through the challenges they face.
